University of Illinois Extension and Klehm Arboretum & Botanic Garden invite kids ages 6 to 12 to be Young Explorers this summer at Klehm Arboretum, 2715 S. Main St., Rockford. Young Explorers is a new summer program co-sponsored by Klehm Arboretum and U of I Extension. Sessions will be led by U of I Extension staff with help from a Master Gardener, Master Naturalist and Klehm Arboretum volunteers, and will feature fun, interactive and educational activities designed to celebrate nature while exploring the beautiful grounds at Klehm Arboretum. Classes will meet on Tuesday mornings, July 14 through August 4, 2015, from 9 to 11 a.m. Young Explorers may sign up for as few or as many sessions as you wish. Bring your canine friends to spend a day enjoying and exploring our entire 155 acres of gardens and grounds. Our Community Dog Walk is meant to be informal and fun so there’s no scheduled programs, but we do have a cause. Friday, April 24, 2015 Celebrate Arbor Day with a run through the woods! The 2nd annual Arbor Dash is a non-competitive fun run through Klehm’s 155 acres of trees and gardens at twilight. A brand new course that’s part road race, part trail run, the Arbor Dash is open to runners and walkers of all ages and fitness levels. In addition to a t-shirt, free passes to the garden and a reusable grocery bag, every participant goes home with their own seedling to help keep the forest in the Forest City.
