Saturday, February 28, 2015 9:30am-11:30am Dr. Woodruff Imberman will present a slide show/talk “How To Make Your Rock River Area Lilies Great”.  Woodruff Imberman is past president of the Lily Society and lectures widely on lilies at garden clubs throughout the Midwest. He is the author of numerous articles in regional and national horticultural magazines on lilies, is an amateur lily hybridizer, an accredited international lily judge, and has won many awards for his lilies. Those attending the talk will learn simple propagation techniques for growing lilies, hear about the wide variety of lilies that flourish in our area, and how to design a garden with lilies so some are in bloom all Summer long. Horticulture for the Holidays

Saturday, November 15, 2014 9:00am – 12.00pm University of Illinois Extension’s annual Horticulture for the Holidays event is scheduled for November 15th from 9 a.m. to noon (check-in begins at 8:30 a.m.) at Klehm Arboretum & Botanic Garden. Participants will experience two make-it-take-it workshops. The $25 fee includes all workshop materials, admission into Klehm Arboretum, and morning beverage service. Registration is limited. How To Make Seed Balls

Seed balls make sowing a lot easier!  Seed balls are seeds wrapped in soil materials , then dried and planted later.  Seed balls can be dropped anywhere suitable for the species during the germination period.  First, sift clay to remove lumps and then measure out 5 parts clay,  3 parts compost and 1 part seeds.  Combine the seeds with the compost first, then add enough clay and water to hold the mixture together.  Roll out small amounts of the seed mixture to about the size of a penny.  Store seeds balls in a cool, dark area where insects will not disturb them.  Refrigeration works best if you have room available in your fridge.  In spring, toss the seed balls in a cleared area to germinate.  This method works great for wildflower gardens and is...
