Girl Scout Day @ the Arboretum When: Sunday, October 4, 2015 9:00am – 4:00pm Where: Klehm Arboretum & Botanic Garden What: Girl Scout Day at the Arboretum is a chance for Girl Scout Troops in Northern Illinois to come out to Klehm Arboretum for a fun filled day of nature related activities. There are six stations for Girl Scouts to complete. At each station, Scouts will learn about and complete an activity related to that specific topic. The topics include Flowers, Geocaching, Bugs, Trees, Hiking, and Gardening. Click here to learn more about the stations. This event is in conjunction with the annual Autumn @ the Arboretum. Planting Bulbs

Gardeners can find a wide selection of spring bulbs for planting right now. The earlier the bulb goes into the ground the longer it will have to establish before cold soil temperatures arrive. Even if you end up planting spring bulbs with your parka on, the bulbs will still show up and bloom next spring. Bulbs will be planted based on their diameter, bigger bulbs deeper, smaller bulbs much closer to the surface. A general rule of thumb gardeners follow is 2-3 times as deep as the bulbs diameter, unless there are planting instructions stating otherwise. Rockford has a lot of different species of native pollinators but many of their populations are declining. Gardeners can be directly involved in their survival. Main St., Rockford. Young Explorers is a new summer program co-sponsored by Klehm Arboretum and U of I Extension. Sessions will be led by U of I Extension staff with help from a Master Gardener, Master Naturalist and Klehm Arboretum volunteers, and will feature fun, interactive and educational activities designed to celebrate nature while exploring the beautiful grounds at Klehm Arboretum.
