Cook Horticulture Series Dave Wanninger is the Horticulturist in Charge at Boerner Botanical Gardens in Hales Corners, Wisconsin. Previously, Dave worked many years as Horticulturist at Beaver Creek Nursery and Klehm’s Song Sparrow Farm (not affiliated with Klehm Arboretum). Before that, Dave operated a landscaping company and was the nursery manager at a large independent garden center. He was also a longtime Instructor in the Horticulture program at Blackhawk Technical College in Janesville, Wisconsin.  Dave embraces a large plant palette, but particularly favors hostas, peonies, and dwarf conifers in his home garden. SWCD Tree Sale

Deadline Friday, March 21 Each year the district sells bare root trees, evergreen, shrub seedlings, and transplants in an effort to increase efforts to provide energy conservation and/or habitat cover for wildlife in the rural setting.  These starter seedlings and transplants are an investment in the future. In addition to energy conservation and wildlife habitat, trees serve a number of other purposes.  Ten mature trees remove approximately 5 tons of Carbon Dioxide from the atmosphere annually.  They also dilute polluted air with fresh oxygen.  One hundred mature trees catch about 250,000 gallons of rainwater each year.  Trees planted appropriately can save up to 25% of annual cooling costs and save 10 to 25% of energy used for heating.  In 40 years, the average tree returns $2.70 in benefits for every $1 of investment.  Click...

RPS 205 Elementary Schools Celebrate Arbor Day all Week Celebration Culminates with Tree-mendous Event on Friday April 19, 2012… To many children, trees are valued for shade on a hot day and maybe a good branch to hang from. The last week in April, however, 5900 students from 25 RPS 205 elementary schools will learn to appreciate much more about trees during a weeklong “Arbor Day for Rockford Schools” celebration organized by Klehm Arboretum & Botanic Garden as part of its Community Trees Program. Students at participating schools will learn about the trees in their community and how to protect them through engaging, educational activities all week long. They will also learn how trees grow and will help plant a tree on school grounds. The weeklong activities culminate with a “Tree-mendous Arbor Day” celebration...
