Saturday, January 10, 2015 8:30am – 10:30am Looking for a fun family activity?  This is it!  Get up early and help local bird expert Barb Williams search and listen for native birds in the quiet atmosphere.  She will lead a family-friendly walk to identify the many birds making the arboretum their home.  Visitors can help listen for the distinct sounds and learn the songs and calls of native birds such as an owl, cedar waxwing or black-capped chickadee singing.  Come dressed for the weather and warm up with hot chocolate afterward.  Then, stay and make a bird feeder to attract some of those birds just identified on the walk!  All ages are welcome at this event. Horticulture for the Holidays

Saturday, November 15, 2014 9:00am – 12.00pm University of Illinois Extension’s annual Horticulture for the Holidays event is scheduled for November 15th from 9 a.m. to noon (check-in begins at 8:30 a.m.) at Klehm Arboretum & Botanic Garden. Participants will experience two make-it-take-it workshops. The $25 fee includes all workshop materials, admission into Klehm Arboretum, and morning beverage service. Registration is limited. Call The hands-on workshops are designed to inspire participants to incorporate horticulture into their seasonal celebrations. Candice Miller, U of I Extension Horticulture Educator and floral designer, will present the principles of good floral design, and then lead a hands-on workshop with participants to create their own one of a kind, fall arrangement. She will then demonstrate how to transform the fall arrangement into a festive winter/holiday arrangement. Participants will make their own fall arrangement; we will be working with fresh botanicals. Kathy Justis, U of I Extension master gardener, will lead attendees in decorating a set of rustic wooden votive candle holders to compliment their fresh arrangement. A very well seasoned band with years of musical experience. Big Daddy Woo Woo has opened up for “KC and The Sunshine Band”, played with members of “The Time”, opened up for “Confunkshun”, opened up for “38 Special” and also played after “Earth, Wind & Fire” as the finale for the Beloit Riverfest!   The Gardens close at 3:00pm that day and reopen at 4:00pm for the concert. Tuesday, July 22, 2014 9:00am – 11:00am   University of Illinois Extension and Klehm Arboretum & Botanic Garden invite kids ages 6 to 12 to be Young Explorers this summer at Klehm Arboretum, 2715 S. Main St., Rockford. Young Explorers is a new summer program co-sponsored by Klehm Arboretum and U of I Extension. Sessions will be led by U of I Extension staff with help from Master Gardener, Master Naturalist and Klehm Arboretum volunteers, and will feature fun, interactive and educational activities designed to celebrate nature while exploring the beautiful grounds at Klehm Arboretum. Classes will meet on Tuesday mornings in June and July, from 9 to 11 a.m. See below for exact dates. Young Explorers may sign up for as few or as many sessions as you wish. Each class is $5. Free entrance into the Arboretum is included. Financial assistance available. Young Explorers dates and topics include: June 10 – Soil: From the Ground Up! June 17 – Wildlife: Your Friendly Neighbors June 24 – Botany: Be a Plant Detective! July 8 – Trees: Make Like a Tree and Leaf! July 15 – Insects: What’s Bugging You?
