University of Illinois Extension and Klehm Arboretum & Botanic Garden invite kids ages 6 to 12 to be Young Explorers this summer at Klehm Arboretum, 2715 S. Main St., Rockford.

Young Explorers is a new summer program co-sponsored by Klehm Arboretum and U of I Extension. Sessions will be led by U of I Extension staff with help from Master Gardener, Master Naturalist and Klehm Arboretum volunteers, and will feature fun, interactive and educational activities designed to celebrate nature while exploring the beautiful grounds at Klehm Arboretum. Classes will meet on Tuesday mornings in June and July, from 9 to 11 a.m. See below for exact dates.

Young Explorers may sign up for as few or as many sessions as you wish. Each class is $5. Free entrance into the Arboretum is included. Financial assistance available.

Young Explorers dates and topics include:

June 10 – Soil: From the Ground Up!

June 17 – Wildlife: Your Friendly Neighbors

June 24 – Botany: Be a Plant Detective!

July 8 – Trees: Make Like a Tree and Leaf!

July 15 – Insects: What’s Bugging You?

July 22 – Pollution: The Dirt on a Dirty Environment.

A small snack and juice will be provided at the end of each class. Parental involvement is encouraged but not required.  Drop-ins are welcome until class fills.  Preregistration is encouraged.
