Come to Rockford, Illinois, for the opportunity to learn from Tim Gruner, the curator of Anderson Japanese Gardens, and Dr. Jeffrey Behr, a Rockford resident who has a collection of 185 Japanese maples. Tour Klehm Arboretum, Anderson Gardens, and 5 private gardens. The day will begin at Klehm Arboretum, 2715 S. Main, Rockford.

8:30 AM- Tour at Klehm Arboretum

Klehm Arboretum has an assortment of plant life unlike any other natural area in the United States. The combination of native plants and those from around the world provides a unique botanical resource for study. The site includes many unique species from throughout the United States that normally do not thrive in this region, plus the Midwest’s most vigorous mature evergreen collection.

10:00 – Tim Gruner, Curator of Anderson Japanese Gardens - www.andersongardens.org

Patterns in Nature that Inspire Japanese Gardens and the Interaction Between Gardens and Architecture

Tim will discuss the use of organic and geometric lines used to make the garden and architecture one space. Also, the pattern in a naturally growing tree along with the pattern of the branches and trunks in a natural forest are revealed and used to inform our planting and pruning.

11:00 – Dr. Jeffery Behr

An introduction to the five Acer palmatum groups, their characteristics and uses, as well growing and over wintering Japanese Maples in the upper Midwest.

11:30 LUNCH Box lunch provided for those who register in advance.

12:00 Tour Anderson Japanese Gardens

1:30 Tour the garden of Dr. Jeffery and Diana Behr

2:00 to 6:00 Private gardens open
